It is better to start with Rose, Lily, Galatia, and then this tale. As I have said before please feel free to
share this tale but give the author the proper credit.
Grace
Grace was an orphan at age four. She was
given the gift of the Chameleon. She learned fast and stole the leftover food
from the plates in a café. It was there that she was found by one of the Elite.
The Elite were usually low-level noble children with the gift, that showed
aptitude in not just intelligence but physical. They became Knights, guardians
of Chamelia. The best fighters of the kingdom.
Warden was a training officer for the
Elite. He watched the child wait to make her move. Within seconds, she grabbed
the piece of bread and two apple slices, before the servers knew it was gone.
It took a couple of times before he was able to see how the child was getting
in and out of the café so fast. He finally found the loose boards in the fence
that was blocking the back of the café from the alley.
He discreetly found a place to strip out
of his clothes, and a place to hide them. He blended into his surroundings and
waited to follow the little girl. Until she hit puberty, she would not have the
heightened senses to hear his heartbeat, or be able to pick up his scent, and
only training allowed the better eyesight to catch the subtle movements of
Chameleon.
As soon as he knew where the child spent
her nights, he decided to gain her trust. The little girl found fruit, an
exotic variety of an apple. It was small and sweet tasting. He did this for a
few days until he knew he could approach her. He waited for the time she
returned to her nest for the night, and he waited near it. Just deep enough in
the shadows, so he would not scare her.
She saw him and the apple he was tossing
in the air. She knew that apple.
“I’m Warden. I’m not going to hurt you.”
He tossed the apple to her and she caught it. She slanted her head to the right
and looked at Warden.
“I have plenty of more apples and other
food you might like. A warm bed, clean clothes, toys you can play with.” She
was still looking at him, deciding if he was trustworthy. He squatted down to
be more at her eye level. She knew from experience that if he wanted to grab
her, or try to, he could. She could not quite understand why this adult had
brought her food and was being nice.
“It’s smart not to trust me. No pressure
to come with me. I understand. Show this to girl who brings you things. She’ll
know if I can be trusted or not.”( A serving girl who worked at the Café had
snuck out items such as a cup, bucket for water, even a blanket for the little
alley girl.) He set a cloth patch on the ground and walked away.
The serving girl came with a rag doll. The
little girl showed her the patch and told her about the man. The serving girl
told her that he was trustworthy and explained the best she could so the girl
would understand who he was. She said he would be good to go with him and if
she wanted, she could take her to where he could be found as soon as she was
done with work.
So, the alley girl took her blanket and
new rag doll and went with the serving girl to the Elite Training Institute.
The serving girl knocked on the door.
“Lost.” A gruff male voice said through
the peephole.
“My name is Treya. This is Grace. She was
given this patch and told to ask me about what it means. I told her I would
help her find the man.” She held the patch up to the peephole. It was shaped
like a shield and had a Raven perched on a sword.
“Stay put.” A moment later the door opened,
and Warden was standing in the walkway.
“So, your name is Grace.” He knelt to be
eye level with her and offered his hand. She shyly shook it with some
reassurance from Treya.
“Why don’t I show you and Treya around and
if you want you can stay here.” Warden
showed her everything from the gym, to the classrooms, weapons room, where her
room would be if she stayed. Grace still was not sure about Warden but when he
worked things out that Treya and her family could stay with her, she agreed to
give it a chance.
Treya was fifteen, and therefore able to
accept the job offer as Warden’s Assistant, her family had to move into the
institute also. There was room for them, and an extra housekeeper was needed
anyway, and her Treya’s mother could help with that, and their father could be
put to use as a tutor. He had taught history till he had gotten sick. He could
now get the care he needed. It came with the job.
Grace was officially adopted as Warden’s
daughter. Treya became like her big sister and her family like a set of
extended family. She also became part of the Elite training program, once she
was old enough of course.
She excelled at her studies. Found a love
with gymnastics and the whip. She preferred defensive weapons over offensive,
though she could use any weapon well enough. Her stronger weapon was with the
bow, staff, hand clubs, and of course the whip. She got used to being an
outsider. Though being Warden’s daughter helped keep her from most of the
bullying associated with being one of the few females in the program and not
being a noble. She did have a few friends, and one was in the Elite program.
***
“Well, well. You know Grace if you wanted
to have a man, you could have just asked.” A male with a medium voice said.
Grace could almost literally feel the heat coming off the man standing behind,
his eyes were hidden in the shadow of the doorway. Grace took her hand, and
gently brushed the man’s hand. He was still fuming but would hold himself in
check for now.
“Cole, you wouldn’t want me to make the
Pleasure girls jealous.” The men in the area were stifling laughter. Grace could
not hide the smirk that spread across her face. Cole was mad. He lunged at
Grace. In a blink of an eye, Grace had pulled the seemly small metal rod from
her belt, flicked her wrist, the rod extended, and Cole was on the floor.
“Never let your rage control you.” Grace
offered her hand, and as she expected he declined. The man that had been behind
her moved into the light. He had stepped beside her right side, and when Cole
caught his eyes, he backed up.
“Foolish move. Makes you look like prey.”
His golden eyes twinkled.
“Cole, let me introduce you to Prince
Flint of Hunters Moon.” The Prince extended his hand, and Cole respectfully
shook it. Only because protocol demanded it.
“I let Grace handle you, Cole, but mark my
words, and this is to everyone in this room, I will not idly stand by and let
you treat her with disrespect.” The predator gleaned in his eyes. Warden had
entered the room. He was updated by Mace, Grace’s best friend.
“Cole, I’ll let the Prince have a go at
you, if he sees fit. Grace. Prince Flint if you’ll follow me.” Warden led them
to the private garden outside his office. The current High King and High Queen
were testing waters for a permanent peace between Viperion and Chamelion.
Prince Flint lived right over the border, and the two had been trading for a
while. Both sides thought it was time to take the next step. Prince Flint had
met Warden and they got along well.
***
Grace was busy sparring with Mace. Warden
was watching them and well as a woman with a dancer’s physique.
“Your right. She is an acrobat and the way
she handles that whip; it is like an extension of her body. She has such
control. No fear of it. She’s perfect but will she be willing?”
“It’s not the usual job for her, but she
has trained in dance. Helps with timing, among other things. All you can do is
ask.” Mace and Grace finished, bowed to each other, and Grace approached
Warden. Mace went to clean up.
“Grace, this is Faye.” She shook the hand
offered her.
“I’ll leave you two to talk.” Grace took
the towel and large cup of water Warden handed her, before he left. She
motioned to a nearby table and the two sat down.
“I have a job offer for you. One a bit
unusual.” Faye gave Grace a minute to drink some water.
“Go on.”
“The High King and Queen are holding a
special feast in Prince Flint’s honor, and I was told you know The Serpentine
Dance.”
“I’ve been told I do it as well as a Viperion.”
“I was hoping I could hire you to do the
dance.”
“I’m not doing it nude.” Faye smiled. She
was ready for this.
“I have a costume that covers enough and lets
you have the flexibility needed. You’ll appear nude, but not be.”
“I assume you have that written in a
contract.” Faye handed her the papers. She read through it once, took a few
more gulps of water and read it again. It was simple contract. She would do the
dance and had to be there for the rest of the feast, in costume. The pay was
fair, more than fair. She would also have help with her hair and makeup.
“Warden has already seen the contract, I
see.” He had his initials on the bottom. He approved the terms, and Grace saw
nothing more to be added.
“I do have one question?”
“Go ahead.”
“I have a Viperin whip and would prefer to
use it.” Viperin whips were longer, and the one she had was not laced with
venomous tiny blades hidden in the braiding, which was usual for a Viperin
whip.
“Fine with me. So, we have an agreement?”
Grace shook her hand and initialed the contract. She had a few days before the
festival. Enough time to practice the dance once a day and do a small thief job
she had ordered by the court. A contract violation, and the necklace that was
used to as payment for the service was to be returned and had not been, so
Grace was hired to retrieve it. She was good at stealing, and Warden made sure
her skills did not go rusty. This was not the first time she had done this kind
of job.
***
The day of the feast arrived, and Grace
was glad that she would not have to go the body make up process again. Or wear
the costume that did cover comfortably but did make her look naked, especially
after the makeup was put on.
Grace looked in the mirror. She was
covered in golden scales. It made her emerald green eyes more noticeable. Her
raven black hair shone. It was put up in a braid and bun to keep it out of the
reach of the whip. During the dance, her feet would be bare, but for now she
had soft gold ballet slippers on her feet. She was given a pale gold wrap
around with a ribbon belt, to keep her covered before the dance. The mask would
be put on right before the dance. Grace grabbed her whip and got into the
carriage with the two females that had helped her get ready.
Grace put the soft gold mask on and tied
the ribbon tightly in the back of head. She entered the hall and all eyes
focused on her. She knew she looked stunning and since puberty, boys, and men noticed
her. She got used to it and did not use it to her advantage.
The dance went flawlessly and at the end
it was the soft green eyes that caught her attention, after she bowed. Prince
Kieran had taken notice of her. They say that eyes are the window to the soul,
and Grace knew there was some truth to that. She did not lust in his eyes. It
was appreciation of her dance and yes, beauty. The eyes were drinking her in,
and for a moment she found herself doing the same. Memorizing every inch of him
that she could and storing it away in her memory.
She survived the feast and every now and
then Prince Kieran and her caught eyes. Though Grace was beautiful, smart, and
had other characteristics any man she like, she had never been in a courtship.
She felt drawn to Kieran but wondered if it was a girl’s hapless fantasy or
there was something more. She wanted something more, but she did not have a
drop of noble blood in her. No Queen on the throne, besides the first high
queen had not been a noble at some level. Was it truly foolish to believe that
love could conquer all?
***
It took Kieran one day to figure out
who Grace was and where she lived. A few more hours and he knew she was not
noble. It did not matter to him. All he knew is he had to see her again. He could
not explain his pull toward her, all he knew is she encompassed his thoughts
and dreams.
He found Grace. She was surrounded by teenage
girls in the garden behind the Elite Academy. By sheer accident, she had become
the local storyteller. When she was thirteen, she was telling fairy tales to
the servant children who lived in at The Academy. Word got around and she was
asked to tell not just fairy tales, but myths, legends, moral tales, etc. So
today was the day to warn the teenage girls the importance of waiting for
marriage before giving themselves to a man.
She had a simple short sleeved dress on,
barefoot, her long hair flowing free in the cool breeze. He sat on a bench just
close enough to hear what was going on. Heightened hearing let him sit well out
of the way.
“Grace, come on. One more time.” She could
not say no to all those pleading looks.
“Once more, than back to tutoring. Deal.”
“Deal.” The group said in unison.
“Before the three kingdoms were fully
created, each brother wanted a wife to rule by their side. The youngest was a
thief. The two other brothers found it easy to find a wife, but not the Prince
of Thieves. He was known to steal love and never return it. One day he made a
jewel heart out of a ruby that was blood red. He locked it up in a glass case
and proclaimed that whoever could steal his heart could be his Queen. A young
Chameleon woman, an orphan, decided to take the challenge. She saw something in
the Prince that no one else had. She saw the loneliness in his eyes, and
something indescribable drew her to him. She was the only woman who managed to
successfully break in and she stole his heart. It was through her that he
learned love and it was through this knowledge that it is said that the next
generation of women with the gift, would think twice before sacrificing their
maidenhood to a man. Those given the gift of the lizard would experience more
pain and sensitivity when giving themselves fully. The gift should be a
sacrifice given in love, not lust.”
The group thanked Grace and went back to
class. It was then that Kieran approached her. He convinced her to give him an
hour of his time. She gave him two. They just talked about and got to know each
other better. The more they opened up, the stronger that invisible pull became.
For two weeks they snuck time with each other. Then what they expected would
happen did. His parents made an arranged marriage. Grace knew this could happen
though it broke her heart. She focused on her work and Kieran, just fit his
name, he was in a dark mood.
***
He had tried to talk to his father, and he
was insisted that Kieran would grow to love his new bride in time. So, he went
to his mother.
“Who is she?” His mother asked as soon as
he shut the door to her study.
“Her name is Grace. She is one of the
Elite but not of noble blood. She’s been raised by Warden.” Warden was one of
the top trainers and well known.
“That explains why your father won’t budge
on the arrangement. I have an idea. Follow me.” He followed his mother to the
small attic that held some of her personal items that she did not usually use
but wanted to have. She pulled out a small oak chest and opened it. She handed
Kieran an electronic copy of the royal coupling laws.
“Section eighteen. Regarding non-noble
women or men. Look at the very last page section twelve.” As he read, she
pulled out a small green box and pulled out a ruby heart hanging on a gold
chain.
“I can offer my heart to be stolen and the
winner becomes Queen?” He asked.
“Yes. The risk is it may not be her that wins
if she enters the competition at all. If she loves you. She will. The only rules
are you can buy anything or anyone to help you steal the heart. The contender must
be a virgin and not currently engaged in a contract or arranged marriage. BY
the time of the announcement, three days are given to plan and try to steal the
heart. If no one succeeds, you go through with the arrangement. I can convince
your father. It is in the law books, though it is not commonly used. Here’s
your heart.” she handed him the necklace.
His mother persuaded her husband and the
announcement was made the next day. It took some prodding of friends and
family, but Grace gave in. She loved Kieran and knew that she had to take this
chance, if she lost, at least she lost to worthy opponent. If anyone could
steal Kieran’s heart, she could.
As per the rules, she registers and gave
her account information. She would have to present receipts for all purchases
during the contest. A simple Purity test, came next, which she cleared of
course. A signature on the contest rules after she read them, and she got to work.
***
Luck was in Grace’s favor. An opportunity opened.
One of the Prince’s cousin was visiting, and a feast was to be held in his
honor. He was a bit of a partier and Pleasure Girls were hired for the
occasion. Just to be as servers and nothing more. Guards would be present to
make sure nothing more happened.
Grace knew the Mistress of the Pleasure
House where the girls would be coming from. She always sent business there when
she could and was told if she ever needed something to ask. This favor could
change her life.
She did not feel as naked when she looked
naked, as she did now. She was a barely covering top made from soft chain
colored mental. The bottoms just covered between the legs area, and a strip off
cloth between her butt cheeks. She added a matching belt, with a small
compartment on it, and a few concealed tools of the trade. Her feet were bear,
but a thin silver bunch of chains hung around her neck, and two matching
anklets on each foot. Her hair was loosely pulled back to keep it away from the
food. She wore a silver butterfly style mask and makeup was barely there.
Thankfully, Prince Kieran would not be there, he had previous royal engagement.
She survived the few hours of gawking,
drunk men, then made her escape. At least the outfit was quiet. Patience and
quickness were what she needed. She made it to her destination without leaving
a trail of drugged guards. A quick lock pick after having her small dragonfly
sweeper check for the types of security being used and disabling all the
electronic ones.
The dragonfly swept the room and cleared
it. Grace recognized the pressure trap on the glass lid of the container that contained
the heart. A little innovation and she opened the box from underneath the table
it was sitting on. She slipped it in the belt compartment and the dragon fly
was retrieved and put in the secret interior pocket of the belt.
She heard him soon after he entered the
room. His heartbeat was rapid, and she recognized the scent of the cologne. She
grabbed the small metal rod, and, in a flash, her quarter staff was ready. She
also intentionally knocked the box on the ground, breaking it and setting off
the silent alarm.
“Cole. Walk away.” Grace prepared herself
to fight him. She noticed that he was hiding his right hand. Not a good sign.
“I have my orders, don’t take it
personally.” Cole said as a jackal like smile spread across his face.
“Whose?” She was buying time.
“Personal. Your breathing is a problem to
the family that hired me.”
“Really? Or am I just a problem for you?”
Cole decided enough talk and lunged. She managed to avoid the claw glove on his
hand. She recognized the Viperion glove. The claws would be dipped in poison.
If Grace was lucky, just the type to slow her down. Cole had some honor. She
felt skin contact. Slight burning, and the feel of warm blood running down her
arm.
She resulted to throwing anything she grab
at him. Less exertion would slow her heart beat down and slow the venom. She
knew it would take time for the guards to arrive. She was hoping it would not
be long.
The more she fought, the faster her skin
burned with fever and things were getting blurry. Finally, her legs gave, and
she hit the floor. Cole pushed her on her back and raised the short sword above
his head but before he could kill her, a dagger was thrown into his shoulder,
and as soon as the sword dropped toward his side, he was pushed on his back by
an armored body guard.
Prince Kieran ran by Grace’s side and
gently cradled her in his arms. One of the guards had already left for the
healer who soon appeared.
“What type of venom?” The healer asked as
Cole was being held by a guard, a laser gun poking his back.
“Slider venom.” He did a quick test on the
glove claw and confirmed Cole’s claim. He pulled a vial from his bag and knelt
by Grace.
“Tilt her head.” He opened the vial and
poured the anti-venom in her mouth. Grace managed to swallow it on her own.
“Is there somewhere we can take her.” The
healer asked.
“There’s a spare room down the hall.”
Kieran said as he took the blanket a guard offered him to cover Grace. He
nodded his thanks.
Grace was soon lying in a bed. The healer
finished his examination.
“She’ll be feverish for a while. I have given
her something to help bring the fever down, but she will have one for a while.
A cold compress on her forehead will help keep her cooler. Do not cover her in
anything hotter than a sheet or two. Esa, has helped me get her into something
more comfortable. A light, cotton tunic. Oh, and the belt compartment broke and
this fell out.” He handed Kieran the heart.
“I think you have your future wife to tend
too. She will probably sleep for most of the day. I will check on her tomorrow.
If you need me, Esa will know where to find me. She will be fine. Don’t worry.”
He put his hand on Kieran’s shoulder and gently squeezed it before he left.
Kieran made sure Grace was settled and
under the watchful care of Mace. He had sent for him because he figured a
familiar face would make her feel safer. Now he had the duty of updating his
parents. Though his father was not happy that his son would be marring Grace,
he had no choice but allow it. She had stolen his son’s heart successfully.
***
Grace woke up and saw Kieran asleep
in the rocking chair next to her, Warden was sitting in a chair by the window.
Sketch book in hand.
“How long have I been out?” Warden put the
sketch book down and smiled.
“A day and a half.” He whispered. Kieran
stirred a bit but did not wake up.
“I’ll send the guard to get the healer. He
has hardly left you. Mace practically had to throw him out to take a shower and
eat.” Before he left, he poured a glass of water, and handed it to Grace.
“Slowly. I’ll be right back.” Warden
stepped outside to talk to the guard. Kieran was still sound asleep, and Grace
was sitting up in bed.
“Healer’s on his way. Food is too.” Kieran
finally woke up.
“Why didn’t wake me?” He was looking at
Warden.
“You looked like you needed it.” Grace
said as she smiled at him.
“I have something for you.” He handed her
a small wooden box. Grace opened it and found a gold band with an emerald in
the center of it.
“My father is still coming to terms with
our engagement, so tread carefully with him, but my sisters, and mother are
looking forward to get to know you better.” Grace put the ring on.
“All right gentlemen, out of the room for
a moment, please.” The healer said as he entered the room. Warden and Kieran
went to wait in the hall, closing the door behind them.
“Grace, this is Esa, my apprentice. She helped with the clothing change.
I’m healer Holden.” Grace shook both their hands.
“How do you feel?”
“Hungary. A bit tired.”
“Normal. Let me check your arm.” He
removed the bandage. Cleaned it and reapplied the healing ointment.
“It won’t scar. Got to it fast enough.”
“How long before I can get up on my feet
again?”
“Warden warned me about you. Take it a day
at a time. If you manage to hold down solid food, then I will see about letting
you take a short walk to the garden and get some fresh air. Your body has been
through a lot. You need to take it easy, give it a few days.”
“Alright.” A knock on the door. Esa went
to open it, and a female servant entered with food. It was a bowl of chicken
broth, a cheese sandwich, an assortment of fruit, and a glass of milk. She set
it on the table next to the bed.
“Eat it slow and in a few hours, if you
keep it down you can have your short walk.”
Holden packed up his bag and threw the old bandage away.
Grace did get her time in the garden and
Warden updated her on Cole’s fate. His tribunal would be in a few days, more if
needed, so Grace could have her say. In a few days, she was up on her feet, for
the most part. She was not allowed to go wandering on her own, because she tended
to push herself. So, she spent time with her fiancée, got to know her future
mother and sister in laws better.
***
A day before the Tribunal and Grace’s
world was about to be turned upside down. She was in the library finishing the
book she had started a week ago, when a knock on the door caught her attention.
It was open and a male servant was standing there.
“Ms. Grace, there is someone to see you.”
“Thank you, Tian. Please send him or her
in.” A second after Tian left a female came into the room.
“You look so much like your mother. Oh,
sorry. My name is Dasana. I worked for The Wolven Family. We need to talk, Ms.
Grace.” Grace knew the parents that had raised her had adopted her. She never
sought for more information.
What Grace heard left her spinning. Since
Dasana was afraid for her life, that Grace would be her proxy at the trial. She
did tell Kieran, Mace, and Warden what Dasana had told her. She would need
their support more than ever.
The day of the Tribunal. Kieran
represented the royal house. The Wolven family was in attendance because Cole
had said their adult son had hired him, he was there of course. Warden and Mace
were present, as moral support.
“Grace Guardson requesting permission to
address the Tribunal.”
‘Granted.” She approached the raised dais
that three Elite knights and current voted in judges of the tribunal sat.
“First off, Cole was hired to kill me. It
is no secret that he and I have never been close friends, but I never thought
he would hire himself out as an assassin. Second, in this envelope is the name
of a witness, who in fear of her life and family’s wellbeing, as asked me to be
her Proxy because what she told me, is the reason why Cole was hired in the
first place.” She handed the envelope to the nearest judge. As soon as the
others saw the contents, the paper with the name was burned after confirmation
that said person did exist, and her written testimony was glanced over and handed
back for Grace to read.
“For the record, I Grace Guardson will be
speaking as Proxy to witness one.”
“Go ahead.” The same male knight said.
“I was twenty-two when I worked as a
servant for The Wolven family. I never had any problems with them. They seemed
like good noble folk. Though they hired mostly servants, they had a few female
slaves, debt slaves. One of those slaves was called Mouse. That was not her
real name, it was Gracie Leander. Her nickname had to do with her small and
slender size. She had deep emerald eyes, and raven black hair that looked blue
when the light hit it exactly right. She was beautiful, and a timid gal but
hard worker. The head of the household had two twin sons. They were as
different as dark and light. The one twin, Ethan was sweet, and kind. His
brother, Eddin, was cruel and indifferent to others. He lusted after Mouse. He
waited and bided his time till his parents had gone to spend time with Ethan,
who had just gotten married, and most of the servants were gone. He took
advantage of the situation and forced himself on Mouse. I took care of her
after, as soon as I came back from tending to my ill brother. I followed
protocol and told the parents. Mouse could not take any abortive tea because it
causes more harm to her because of her size. It could cause her to bleed too
much. The parents never reported the incident. I had no evidence. They made
sure anything I had was gone. I put aside money for us to escape. It became
more urgent when I found out they had hired someone to kill her.
Under the cover darkness, the two-month
pregnant Mouse and I made our escape. It took a couple of weeks and we made it
to the border. We were stopped by an Elite soldier and both of us feared we
would be sent back. He took one look at us and helped get us into the city. He
arranged for Mouse’s slave branding to be removed and got us both a job as
house maids in a Pleasure House. The Mistress knew everything and had no
problem making sure Mouse was tended to properly and protected. It was later
that I found out a man had been hired to track and eliminate both of us, but he
was a too late. We were protected at the Pleasure House. He did find out Mouse
was pregnant, and it turned out that Ethan’s wife had a miscarriage, and no one
had known yet, so Lord and Lady Wolven came up with a plan. If the child were a
boy, he would be raised by his uncle. What they did not know is Mouse was
pregnant with twins. Due to her small size, she died giving birth to a boy and
a girl. With Mouse dead, I was safe. Her boy was adopted, and Ethan was told he
was his brothers by a Pleasure Girl. That is what the documents claimed. The
girl was adopted by a local couple who could not have children of their own. The
Elite guard that helped us, thought I should relocate to be on the safe side. I
did. I heard about the Tribunal and had to let the truth come out.” Grace
glared at her father and sat down.
“Blood from Grace and Eddin has been
tested, she is his daughter. We need no more information. We will recess for an
hour and return with the verdict for Cole and Prince Kieran will decide the
fate of The Wolven family.”
An hour later. The air was somber, and
Grace held her rage in check. She was to be High Queen on day, so she had to
act like one.
“As for Cole Rifedin’s fate. He will be
exiled from Ghostdom. Any money earned in his Elite account will be transferred
to Grace Guardson’s account as reparations for his actions. He is to be
stripped of any titles and honors. You have one week to leave the kingdom. If
found within after that time your life is forfeit. As for The Wolven family.
Ethan will inherit any monetary funds and property minus what is seized for
reparations for the attempt on Grace Guardson’s life. The Wolven line is
abolished, and Ethan will take on his wife’s name and create a new family line
though them. Eddin, will face imprisonment in a work camp as well as his father
and mother, for their part in his deception and covering of the crime. The word
of the Tribunal is final.” Everyone left the room. Before her father left,
Grace stopped the guards escorting him.
“In time, I may be strong enough to
forgive you, but I will never consider you my father or even family. That man
over there is my father, the one standing next to him, is my brother. The
Prince next to him, is my family, his family will be mine soon. They are my
blood, not you. I will never give you any more thought.” Kieran came up and put
his arm around her shoulder and they left the room. Kieran left her in the
hallway after he knew she would be alright. He had to sign some record
documents for the Tribunal. She said she would wait for him in outside by the
fountain. Warden and Mace said farewell they had work to do, and Grace was
alone for a moment.
“Ms. Guardson.” A soft male voice said.
Grace looked at found the same pair of emerald eyes looking at her. The same
raven black hair, blue in the sunlight.
“I understand if you don’t want to meet or
have anything to do with me.” Grace stood up. Her eyes watery with tears. She
hugged him.
“You’re my brother. You had no say what
happened to you. I do not begrudge Uncle, that sounds strange. Uncle Ethan
either. He did not know. I would like to get to know you both better. I am
getting married at the end of the month and I’d like you both to be there. If
you could stay till, then I’d like that too. You know I never got your name.”
“Grady.”
“Nice to meet you Grady.” Soon Kieran got
introduced and Grady contacted the man he called father and updated him. By the
end of the week, Grace’s blood family was in town and all her family was
getting to know each other a lot better.
***
A few days before the wedding Grace had
an unexpected visit. She had just gotten the last fitting of her dress done
when there was a knock on her bedroom door. The door was open, and she looked
up from the mask she was placing in a box.
The man standing there was the last person
she thought she would see before her wedding day. She was sure the Elite
students and Knights had quite a shock themselves when the high king walked in.
“May I have a moment of your time, Grace?”
She set the now closed box on her vanity and invited him. Grace did her best
not to let her nervousness show.
“I owe you an apology. My wife has told me
time and again I can be a stubborn man. It seems I can also be cold hearted at
times. It is obvious my son loves you very much, as you do him. I am a fool for
not seeing all of you and only seeing an orphan, who wasn’t noble. I want to
make it clear, you having noble blood is not what changed my mind about you. It
was how you handled yourself at the Tribunal, and what you said to your
biological father after.” The look on Grace’s face prompted the High King to
explain himself a bit more.
“The viewing cameras were still running.” The
Tribunal was publicly broadcast.
“I could see how hard it was to keep
yourself in check. You handled yourself well. A High Queen in the making. I
brought a gift of peace. I know its tradition that a mother gives her daughter
a heirloom piece of jewelry. I know I’m not even close to having that kind of
relationship with you, but I hope this will begin to change that.” Grace took
the rectangular box from the high king and opened it. Inside was an emerald
heart necklace on a gold chain.
“It’s beautiful. Thank you. How about we
start over?”
“I’d like that. How about lunch together?”
“My schedule is open. I’d like that.”
“I’ll be back close to noon. Farwell,
Grace.”
“Farewell King.” She curtsied
appropriately. The lunch was the beginning of a close relationship.
***
The day of the wedding arrived. Grace was
escorted by Mace and Warden, who would give her away. She is wearing a simple
soft white gown, floor length, lightly covered in lace. Instead of a veil she
had a wreath of assorted pale colored flowers in her hair and a white lace mask
on. She wore the emerald heart.
The ceremony was packed with nobles, and
family that Grace now knew. The ceremony was publicly broadcast and simply
perfect. Grace managed not to cry as she walked down the aisle. When Kieran and
her eyes met, she knew she had found her one. No one ever looked at her like he
did. The look that ignored the past, focused on the present, and forgave
anything and everything that might happen in the future.
After the wedding festivities, Kieran and
Grace finally got to be alone on their wedding night. Kieran went to prepare
the room and change into something more comfortable. Grace went to change into
something not so comfortable, but something Kieran would like.
She wore a simple wrap around robe when
she entered the room that was now theirs.
Kieran was sitting on the bed, topless and wearing a white loin cloth.
Grace removed the robe as soon as she shut the door. She was wearing a chain
outfit like the one she had the night she stole his heart but this one,
revealed a lot more on the bottom, and a bit more on the top.
“That was the last thing I’d picture you wearing.”
“You don’t like it?”
“It’s every man’s fantasy.” Grace sauntered
toward the bed and sat next to Kieran. Both were a bit nervous. It was Grace
who made the first move. She had stolen a kiss. Any nerves had inhibitions had
melted. Kieran gently grabbed Grace and deeply kissed her. They both took their
time and explored each other. Drinking in the intimacy that only a married
couple can truly share. There was no rush. Soon they were both naked and nature
took its course.
Grace expected pain. It was the price of
having the gift, but what she expected was not what she felt. She utterly
understood what a sacrifice this was. She did not hold back. She cried in pain
and moaned in pleasure and ecstasy. If there was ever any doubt that Kieran was
her match, it was washed away when she saw how their skin tones begin to blend
into one shade. A sure sign of true compatibility.
Grace went to go clean up and Kieran
covered up just enough to take care of the proof sheet, before his wife returned.
For a while they just laid in each other arms, and soon fell asleep, in a pile of tangled limbs. Grace had never felt
safer.
Sometime passed and Grace became pregnant
and gave birth to a girl. They named her Jewel so she would always know how precious
and loved she was to her parents.
“Grace!” Grace came running into
the courtyard. Mace was looking at Jewel who decided to use the garden wall as
a balance beam. She was the perfect balance of both her parents but inherited
her mother’s love for heights. Kieran was not the first who hinted that Grace
was partly raised by cats.
“Jewel.” The small six-year-old looked at
her mother.
“Yes.” She said in an innocent voice.
Grace smiled. She could not help herself.
“Warden warned me. If I ever had a child
of my own, I would get a near mirror image of myself. He was right. Looks like
he got his payback.” Jewel had climbed off the wall. She then got a certain
look from her mother and went to apologize to Mace.
“Tell you what, later I’ll talk to your
father and we’ll discuss getting you a safe area to climb around in. Ok?” The
gym was not designed for a child.
“Ok. Can Uncle Mace and I go swimming?”
“As long as you behave, and he doesn’t mind.”
“Come on, Runt. Let us go get changed.” Jewel went skipping off to her
room, Mace following her.
“I warned you.” Grace turned toward the entrance to the courtyard and
saw Warden standing there.
“So?”
“I have a few takers. Prince Flint will be the only one from Viperion.
One taker from Artican, several Rangers, several Desert Dwellers, Marinadins,
also. The High King and High Queen from Ghostdom.”
“It’s a decent start.”
“One that has been too long in coming.”
Warden and Grace bowed to the High King and High Queen.
“Since this was partially, you are doing,
my wife and I think you and Kieran should take the reins. You will be High King
and Queen one day, and this is your baby, for the most part. We will back you
and advise when you think you need it or do need it. Kieran has been told. We
trust you.” Grace agreed to stand by her husband. In a month, the beginnings of
change, hopefully would begin to bloom.
***
Grace was nervous. A lot hindered on this
summit. Kieran was the rock that Grace needed. Of course, being raised as a
Prince, met that meetings where a lot could change, did happen and Kieran knew
how to stay calm, or at least appear so.
“Breathe. Relax. You can handle this.”
Kieran took Grace’s hand and squeezed it. Over the next few days, the nobleman
would be arriving. The first to arrive was the High Queen and King of Ghostdom.
Jewel was standing with her parents. She was acting older than her six years.
But she seemed to understand that something especially important was going on.
Grace was surprised when she saw the High
Queen. Galatia was used to look. Not many outsiders of the Capital of Ghostdom,
knew she was marked by the Cat. It was the best kept royal secret. People who
knew saw beyond her stripes and respected her as High Queen.
“High Queen Galatia and High King
Greyson.” A male servant said. A young
boy was slightly behind the two, with two servants, each carrying a baby
basket.
“I’m
Prince Kieran and this is my wife, Grace.”
Everyone shook hands. The young boy moved toward the front by the Queen.
Jewel was now standing in the front of her parents.
“This is our daughter, Princess Jewel.”
Kieran said. She curtsied as she had been taught.
“This is our son, Prince Shadow.” Greyson
said. The two servants with the infants now were standing to the side of the
royal couple. Grace lit up when she saw the babies.
“These are our twins, Boreal, and Aurora.”
Galatia said. Grace took a closer look at the two sleeping little ones.
Grace looked down and Jewel after she felt
a slight tug to her hand. She bent down and Jewel whispered something in her
ear. Grace did the same in response.
“Jewel was wondering if she and Prince
Shadow could go look at the puppies, and maybe take the ponies out for a ride.”
Grace said, as she took into the two female servants and the several guards
that now had moved closer.
“If Shadow wants to, and as long as one of
the guards goes along, I have no problem with that.” Galatia said. It was
obvious Greyson had no qualms either. Grace nudged Jewel. It was Shadow who
took the lead instead.
“I’d like to see the puppies, Princess
Jewel.” He offered her hand and she tentatively took it.
“See the man with black curly hair. That
is Archer. I bet we could get him to come with us. He likes dogs.” Archer
followed the kids. Grace knew she could trust Archer with the children. There
were guards all about anyway.
“Why don’t the men spend time together,
and High Queen Galatia and I can get to know each other better.” Grace said. The
men agreed. So, the men went one way, and the women the other. First stop was
to relieve the load of the two servants. Grace showed them to a room that had
been redone as a guest nursery.
“Thank you for the extra work.” Galatia
said, as she made sure the twins were comfortable in their cribs. They were
still at the age where sleeping a lot was normal. Being Marked as Cats met that
they slept for a good portion of the day and night.
“They’ll be out for a while longer. Helene
can has a com on her so if they wake sooner, she can call me. I would love to
see your garden. I’ve heard a lot about it.” The garden was famous. Plants from
all over the world, from hot, to cold, and in between temperature plants.
“Earlier I didn’t mean to stare.” Grace
said as they headed down the hall. Leo and Falcon behind them.
“I’m used to it.”
“Shadow seems older than six.”
“You noticed. He just seems to know.” The
women talked about their children and their pasts, quickly becoming friends.
The men went fishing, and a tracking, not
actual kill hunting. They too, were becoming close. As for Shadow and Jewel,
they were having fun being kids. Playing with the puppies and going horseback
riding. It took a little while, but Shadow got Jewel to open up and they too
were becoming good friends. Jewel even liked Archer.
By the end of the week. Twelve noble
families ranging from knights to high kings and queens had arrived. Many
different regions and kingdoms were represented. Children from infants to
fifteen years old were present. In a few more days, extra days given so
everyone could get to know each other better, and then the Summit would begin.
***
The day of the summit arrived. Grace was
second guessing her dress choice. Jewel and the other children were split into
age groups and would be doing various activities throughout the day, Well,
those who were old enough, anyway.
“That one is perfect. Not too
conservative, but not too sexy. Of course, you could make a sack cloth sexy.”
She saw Kieran’s playful smirk in the mirror reflection.
“Really?”
“Are you saying I’m a liar?” Grace turned
around and looked him straight in the eye.
“Maybe?” A knock at the door. It was time
to go, Grace felt a lot more relaxed.
Prince Kieran entered first and Grace
followed. They stood in front of everyone. Prince Kieran took the pedestal to
address everyone.
“We’re all gathered here today because we
have a vision. A vision that we can live in peace. A vision that we can be more
than our ancestors were, be better rulers for our people, to move forward, and
not stay stagnant, to not go backward. I believe that we can do that. This is
the first step, to a new future. Not just for the nobles but for all.” A
standing ovation.
That night Grace decided to put Kieran to
the test. She entered their room for the night dressed in a sack cloth. Kieran
looked up from the book he was reading, and it hit the bed when he saw her and
started laughing. Once he gained control, he smiled.
“You truly are beautiful inside and out,
my little jester.” He patted the spot on the bed next to him and Grace sat
there. It took just seconds for Kieran to a steal and kiss…
In a few days, the first stones were
placed to start an Assembly of Nobles. Meetings would be yearly. For now, the
work had begun to clear of trading issues between members and keep the peace.
Plus, get to know each other better.
***
Jewel grew up to be a dancer and gymnast
like her mother. She had become a much more self-assured young lady. Grace
always said that was due to her friendship with Prince Shadow. He had a way of
getting her to try new things and meet new people.
A new High King had been on the throne of
Viperion for a few years and had asked to meet with Chameleon. Supposedly he
wanted to possibly align with Chameleon and Ghostdom. It was the perfect
opportunity to act nice because it was the century celebration. Both royal
families knew it was a chance to gage the competition. and prevent a war or
two.
But Grace, Galatia, Greyson, and Kieran
saw an opportunity. A way to get close to the Queen Regent. Prince Flint had
said she might be way to get the whole of Viperion involved with the assembly.
Grace and Shadow could handle themselves, and they would have guards with them.
It was decided that they would attend. It could be bad not too. Sending the
future heirs showed trust with the Viperion. It was all about knowing how to
play the game of politics.
So plans were made and Shadow and Jewel
headed to Viperion. A few days, after their arrival, they were invited to dinner.
Jewel and her mother had decided on her doing the reenactment dance of how the
first high king met his wife. She had tried to kill him.
“The leather armor is a different look for
you. “Shadow said as he handed her one of her throwing daggers.
“You’re sure you’re comfortable with
this?” He added as he handed her another dagger to put in her belt.
“Falcon and I have done this several
times. The part I’m uncomfortable with is having an audience.” Shadow smirked.
“If my mother can barely be covered and
dance in front of royalty, than wear practicality less and to steal my father’s
heart, I think I can handle a leather armor toga, and some close seductive
dance scenes with Falcon. His wife is supportive. It’s the thought of having
someone watching I don’t know that makes me nervous.”
“Just lose yourself in the dance. You’ll
do fine.” Shadow opened the door for her, and they followed the guards to the
dining hall. Jewel met with the other dancers, and Shadow followed the
musicians. He played percussion.
The music began and Jewel was hidden in the
center of the dancers. As the story progressed, she was revealed. As she danced
with her daggers, her eyes met with a young Viperion man. For a split second,
no one else existed, but the two of them. She was more like her mother than she
knew or suspected.
She did an admirable job. A standing
ovation. She and Shadow survived dinner, and the next few days of activities.
Then they would join the Regent Queen and continue the celebrations at her
manor. To Jewels frustration, she did not know who the mystery man was. She
knew she had to find out.
***
That night Jewel went for a nightly stroll
through the garden. Shadow had previous commitments, so beside for her guards,
she was enjoying the flora and looking at the few exotic plants that only bloom
under the moonlight.
“Lovely night.” Jewel jumped just
slightly.
“I didn’t mean to startle you, Princess.”
Jewel recognized the man from the banquet. Her heart skipped a beat.
“I’m Prince Rave.” They shook
hands.
“Call me Jewel, please.”
“Jewel, lovely name for a beautiful
dancer, and deadly weapons expert.”
“Your brother is the high king.”
“Half-brother. “
“I hit a nerve; I apologize.” Rave had not
intended to bite out the answer.
“Sorry. My blood father and I…” He was not
sure how to word it.
“Bad blood. I understand, I think.”
“Why don’t we try this again. I am Rave.
It’s nice to meet you Jewel.”
“Nice to meet you, Prince.”
“Your guards are protective.”
“If they did anything…”
“No. Completely professional.”
“They checked for weapons.”
“Politely I hope.”
“Very. Do you think they mind if I show
you my favorite spot?”
“Gentleman, we’re walking. I’d like that.”
“My mother tended to the garden. The
servants that stayed tend to it now, in her honor. My parents and I enjoyed
walking under the moonlight. Some of my fondest memories were seeing my
mother’s face light up when my papa, showed her his addition.” They entered the
center on the garden. A weeping willow was in the center. Surrounded by night
blossoming roses. In a pale silver. A swing was hanging from the willow. The
day blossom roses were intermixed with the night.
“It’s beautiful.” Jewel took in the scene
around her. The beautiful night blossom flowers. She could only imagine how
beautiful it was in the daytime.
“If you liked to see in the
morning. I could make arrangements for you, Prince Shadow and I, plus, your
guards to breakfast, here tomorrow.” Jewel lit up like a little child getting
the gift she really wanted.
“I’d really like that. Could you show me
the rest of the garden?” Rave showed her
the garden, and it was not just the moon light plants that had begun to blossom.
During the next few days, Rave, Shadow,
and Jewel got to know each other better, and the time to spend some time with
the Queen Regent. Jewel was a bit nervous; she wasn’t sure if it was the
importance this person could be or the fact that she was Rave’s mother.
***
“Fox, please, put the jacket on.” Auna
pleaded with the stubborn four-year-old. Rose entered Fox’s room and took in
the scene. The dress jacket still on the bed. Fox staring down Auna, with his
dress shirt untucked, and feet just in the stockings, no shoes.
“Fox.” The boy turned and went wide eyed
for just a second. His mother was using that no nonsense voice. He knew he was
in trouble. He went for plan B, the innocent look. Rose was smarter than that.
“Auna, I’ll take it from here, thank you.”
Rose shut the door behind her.
“Fox, you have two choices. The first is
properly put your dress clothes on and apologize to Auna. The second choice is
you can stay in your room, not see your brother when he arrives, and still apologize
to Auna.” Fox thought it over for a moment.
“Why do I have to dress up? It’s not
Grandma and Grandpa coming for a visit.” Rose smiled. Rave and Fox had
different fathers, but they definitely were brothers.
“When relatives visit, it’s proper to
dress up, right?” Fox nodded his head.
“Well, when special guests like
Princes and Princesses it’s proper to dress up, or dress formally.”
“I hate dressing up.”
“I’ll tell you a little secret, your
brother, didn’t like dressing up either, and when I was your age, I didn’t like
to where a dress. But sometimes you have to.”
“Okay, I’ll dress up, and say sorry to
Auna.” Rose helped him finished getting dressed and then Fox went to find Auna
and apologize.
Blaze met Rose at the garden gate. Auna
and Fox would soon join them. They headed toward the main gate to await the
arrival of the royals. The coach soon arrived.
Rave was the first out of the carriage,
and Auna had to hold Fox back from running to greet him. Next was Prince
Shadow, and then, Princess Jewel. Protocol always had females last. Rave would
make introductions.
“This is High Prince Shadow from Ghostdom,
and High Princess Jewel of Chameleon. “Everyone curtsied and bowed as
appropriate.
“This is my mother, Regent Queen Rose, her
husband, Prince Regent Blaze. This is my sister Auna, and this little
gentleman, is my brother Fox.” Normal curtsies were exchanged.
“Welcome to my home. My servants will make
sure your baggage is taken care of, and I don’t how what kind of court life you
have, but I prefer to be a bit informal, when I can.” Rose was addressing her
guests, as the servants gathered the baggage. Jewel was fascinated by the
different regions that were represented in her household. Shadow felt a bit
more at home.
“Go on.” Rose let Fox go. Fox ran to his
brother who picked him and swung him around a few times, before setting him
down and as soon as Rave knew he was not going to fall down in the grass,
handed him a small wrapped box. Fox sat on a nearby bench and opened it. Inside
was a small horse lead.
“Thank you. Does this mean we can go pony
shopping?” Fox looked up at his brother.
“It does. Can I go and show Len?” Rose
nodded her head and he took off. A guard at his heel.
“I’d like to show you around and introduce
to my household. Here we are like family. My guests while they stay here are
treated as such. I want you and your men and ladies to feel safe and secure
here.” They began the tour of the
grounds and made their way to the manor.
Fox and three of his friends met them
near the manor entrance. They were talking and pointing at Shadow. Rose had an
amused look on her face.
“Prince Shadow, I believe my son has been
talking to Nelin.” Nelin was one of her guards and a common blood Phantom.
“I think you’re about to have a following.
Fox had been curious about the gifts, and Nelin has been talking.”
“Rose, I’ll be glad to suffice their
curiosity. Please call me Shadow.” Jewel caught Rose’s gaze and raised her
eyebrows in a silent question.
“You met Teala. Fox gets his information
where he can. Teala was a hand maiden of Rose’s who helped with Fox when
needed. She was a common blood Chamelion.
The group finally got up the nerve to ask
Shadow if he would disappear. He started with just his hand, and then all you
could see was his clothes. It took a bit longer, to get the nerve to ask Jewel
to blend in, but she did, even positioning herself on different colored areas,
so part of her would be grass green, and another stone grey. The boys loved it
and went to tell the others what they saw. Over the week of their visit, the
Prince and Princess showed off their gifts to all the household children and
some others that lived nearby. They did not mind. Reward enough to see the
looks of awe on the children’s faces.
After dinner, Rose managed to get Jewel
alone. The Princes had gotten talked into going camping in the garden for the
night. Fox could be very persuasive when he wanted to be, just like his mother.
Rose and Jewel took a walk along the
grounds. Bodyguards nearby enough to intervene but not close enough to
eavesdrop. The usual range for any security guard.
“You have seen to catch my son’s interest.”
Jewel blushed.
“I didn’t mean to embarrass you, but now I
know he’s caught your interest too.”
“He’s not what I expected. Nothing like a
expected a Viperion to be.”
“Has he talked about his family, his
father’s side, blood father’s side?” Rose and Jewel sat on a bench with a perfect
view of the sunset.
“I mentioned his half-brother and I hit a
nerve. I didn’t expect him to say more.”
“Not a surprise. I doubt you have heard
much about the former High King. I think there are some things you need to know
about me and my past to understand Rave, especially if things becomes more.
“Jewel blushed again.
“Alright. Before you go on, does that mean
you approve of something more?” Rose was already liking her more.
“I have no problem with my son deciding
who he wishes to court, and possibly wed. I trust my son’s judgement. I also
appreciate that you care what I think. It says quite a lot about what kind of
person you are.” Jewel noticeably relaxed.
“I’ll start a little before I became High
Queen. I fell in love, and he died in an accident. The high queen died, and the
king was seeking a new wife. I saw an opportunity of improving things for my people
and being a Merchant Princess means that a good ruler makes sacrifices. So, I
did. I Married Bullton, Rave’s biological father, a contractual marriage.
Bullton, was a cruel man, in more ways than one. He did take care of his wife
and son, He even let me meet and deal with the Trade Guilds, as part of my
dowry.
For a while, I kept the truth of how
Bullton treated me from Rave, but boys grow up and he found out. His father was
never really in his life. A check in on him once or twice a year to see how he
was getting on. It was Rave who decided Blaze was his Dad. His sister, Mitra,
the only half sibling from Bullton who he has a relationship with, convinced me
to try a Consort. To my surprise I fell in love with him. Rave makes his own
mind up and is very protective of those he loves.”
“Now I understand. Can I ask why he
accepts Mitra?”
“Mitra was the girl in a set of twins. Her
parents wanted to focus more on the son, so she was raised by her Grandparents.
Foxton is a gentle and understanding man. He’s part of the reason I let Blaze
in my life, and named our first son, after him.” Rose could not help but put
her hand on her large belly.
“Ah. I understand. Hoping for a boy or
girl.”
“Girl would be nice, but healthy and happy
is all I really want. If Rave chooses to share his life with you, and you’re
the one who makes him happy, then you have my blessing.” Rose knew those were
the real words Jewel needed to hear.
“Why, don’t we check on the boys.” Jewel
smiled and they headed off to the camp site.
***
The following morning, Rave and Jewel, got
hooked into going to see the ponies with Blaze and Fox. The ones that would go
on sale, in another two days. Then Rose would join them when Fox chose his
first pony.
So Shadow was free for the
morning to talk with Rose. Fox was a bit disappointed, but Shadow promised he
would go with them riding later and would go with them when he bought his pony.
Fox accepted that.
“Jewel talked a bit about you before we went
to bed. I believe Prince Flint is right.” Rose had a questioning look on his
face.
“My parents and Grandparents have been
working toward uniting the three main kingdoms and all the smaller ones, in
peace. The way they could and should have been. Rulers who rule for the good of
the people, not themselves. We have started putting the stones into place. A
Counsel Alliance. We have a dozen nobles from high and low who want peace and
trading between the regions.”
“Prince Flint is a good man. You have my
backing. But it will take more than that to keep adding ripples into the river
of change. I can get you or whomever from your family a meeting with the Trade
Guilds. You get them on your side, you will get more doors open. But the only
way to get Viperion, may end up messy. How far are you willing to go?”
“You mean war, a revolution.”
“Yes. A small amount of Viperion nobles,
will be on your side. But a majority are very Viperish. Some more than others.”
“Revolution is the last thing we want, but
it has been brought up.”
“There could be one way to avoid it, but
it’s a card you’ll have to wait to put on the table, till you enough stones in
place. Have you heard of Viperians dragon?” Shadow’s eyes got big.
“I’ll take that as a yes. Cassian is the
Warlord Prince of Viperion. Get him on your side, and you have a bloodless
revolt, against the high king. Making Viperion ready for a king or queen who
sees things like you do.”
“Any chance you could introduce us.”
“Brave Prince. I have only formally met
the man, and let me tell you, whoever meets with him, will have to be someone
extraordinary. I can tell you though that he is loyal to Viperians people,
before the king on the throne. For now, keep making allies, and then cross the Dragon’s
bridge when you need to.”
“Your right. How long before you meet the Trade Guild again?”
“I could arrange an earlier meeting, with
you with just the head representative of the Guild before you leave. If that’s
alright with you.”
“Perfect, as long as it doesn’t interfere
with the pony buy.” Rose smiled.
“It won’t. A happy Fox is easier to get along
with. I assume Jewel will represent her people?”
“Of course.” Rose motioned to one of her
guards, and he soon caught up with them with a piece a paper in his hands. He
handed it to Rose.
“Thank you Malk.” He then resumed his
duties.
“Malk is the brother of the Trade Guild’s
Representative. The note says he can meet you after dinner tonight. This is
where he will be. It is a neutral place. Completely safe. Your guards are
welcome to accompany you and if you want pre-scout the area.” Rose handed him
the paper.
“Talkin, is a good man. Be up front and
honest with him. He’ll hear you out.” Rose and Shadow switched conversations
and continued their stroll around the manor.
That night Jewel and Shadow succeeded in
opening another door. Which would lead to many more doors.
***
“Mommy, can I ask you something?” Fox
asked as Rose was tucking him into bed.
“Sure. Go ahead and ask.”
“Why does Rave look at Jewel, like daddy
and you look at each other?”
“Why didn’t you ask your brother?”
“I don’t know.”
“You know your Daddy and I love each other.
Well, I think your brother is in the first stages, of falling in love with
Jewel. Like Annelle’s sister and Malk.” Fox’s eyes lit up with understanding.
“Don’t tell your brother, I don’t think
he’s aware he’s falling in love. Ok.”
“Ok, Goodnight Mommy.” Rose kissed the top
of his head and turned off the light on her way out of the door.
***
The day of Fox’s first pony arrived. Fox’s
parents, his Aunt Mitra, Auna, Rave, Jewel, and Shadow, plus the guards for
protection, went along. Fox took his time looking at the ponies, and finally
found one he liked. Rose got his pick removed from the herd and went to see if
he was a good match. The shaggy mountain pony was perfect.
Fox was the first to catch a glimpse of
the large greyish white mountain wolf, and the dark-haired woman holding the
wolf’s leash. Fox got his mother’s attention and pointed the pair out.
“I have to finish the paperwork for your
pony, so why don’t you see if Rave, will take you over to say hello. You could
introduce Shadow and Jewel to her.” Fox lit up and ran over to his brother. A
glance toward his mother confirmed that Fox had permission. It was not beside
Fox to circumvent one person to get permission from another.
Fox wanted to run toward the pair but Rave
gently grabbed his arm.
“Remember, how you approach Prince. In a
city, he will be alert and more wolf. He’s not at the manor, so we approach
him, and Willow, how?”
“Normal pace. Not running.”
“Good. Let us go say hi.” Jewel, Shadow,
and Auna, followed the two princes. As they approached the wolf turned his head
and saw Fox. He stopped and nudged Willow. She turned and smiled.
“Oh, friends.” Willow bent over and
removed the loose noose that made a collar for the leash she held. The area was
cleared of crowds, and the wolf, as soon as he free, ran straight toward Fox,
and gently knocked him to the ground, licking his face.
“Prince Rave.” Willow bowed respectfully.
Public required protocol.
“Ranger Willow, this is Prince Shadow of
Ghostdom and Princess Jewel of Chamelion. You remember Auna, and obviously
Prince remembers Fox.” Rave smiling at the two, Fox was now scratching behind
Prince’s ears, and he was loving the attention.
“Highnesses, nice to meet you.” More
bowing. She would have curtsied, but she was in uniform. Dark brown pants, matching
boots, knee high, and a medium green tunic with a black leather belt. Her hair
was braided, tied off with a tan piece of leather. On her belt was hooked a
dagger, and a bow and arrow, hung from her back.
“Like wise. “Said Shadow than Jewel.
“Perhaps we should head to the park area.
I think Prince might want to have some playroom.” Prince was the just shy of
the height of a full-grown pony. He lied down and let Fox get on his back. Fox
gently held on with a fist full of fur. They headed to the park. One of the
guards, went with Rose.
Auna handed Fox a ball, she carried a bag
with a few outside toys in it. Just in case, Fox needed to run off some energy.
Soon a game of fetch and keep away, got going on.
“My uncle has told me about your plans. I
can get you a meeting with one of the Lords of the Forest, from Crossington.”
There was something in Shadow’s eyes, something that seemed to pull them
together, but Willow shook it off. A fantasy nothing more.
“I’d greatly appreciate that.” Shadow felt
the connection, sure she had felt it to, but he sensed a wall, around her. A
fear of opening to love. For now, he would back off, see if fate or destiny
wanted them together. He did not want to push her away.
Rose, Blaze, and Mitra soon joined the
group. The pony would be delivered in the evening. Willow got to know the Jewel
and Shadow a bit, and they got to know her a bit better too.
Soon Jewel and Shadow returned to their
respective homes.
